As one of the two major political parties, the Republicans support a conservative, center-right platform. They stand for social conservatism, personal responsibility, and are in favor of supply-side policies.

The political party originated in 1854, where the Republicans became the major opponents to the Democrats. The party grew even stronger when the 16th President of America, Abraham Lincoln, became the first Republican president during the American Civil War in 1860. Known as the Grand Old Party (GOP), the Republican Party has the second most registered voters as of 2004, with more or less 55 million votes, including one-third of the voting public.

Today, Republicans are developing in order to improve last year’s elections. According to former chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ken Mehlman, the party has learned their lessons from the previous terrorist attacks from free nations. They should use “every tool at their disposal” to win the war. However, the overpowering majority of Democrats voted against missile defense and the legislation to allow the interception of terrorist communications or the tribunals to get the information needed.

The Democrats are against many things, like the demolition of the death tax, which the Republicans want to eliminate. Democrats do not believe entrepreneurs and their employees should have the freedom to start small businesses, yet Republicans want these to be able to grow together to provide health care to their employees at a reasonable cost.

Ken Mehlman reiterates that the Republican Party lets people keep more of their hard-earned money. Without a doubt, Ken Mehlman is on the Republican Party’s side. And he is confident that people will realize why and then follow his example.
